Martha is everything I want to be. She is smart, independent, caring, amazing, beautiful, and just overall fantastic.
Her storyline is the most heartbreaking for me because it was obvious that Martha wasn’t meant for The Doctor. He was still getting over Rose and Martha had too much. Martha had her family, her studies, her entire life ahead of her. She was going places.
Yet she was loyal to The Doctor. She traveled the world for him, gave an entire year of her life for him. All while she knew that he was incapable of returning her romantic feeling for him. She had to watch as The Doctor became another man and fell in love with another woman. But she still kept hope.
I just love her so much now. I can’t believe that I had ever hated her. She is my inspiration.
Before I start- this is all my opinion. I don’t mean offence, and I’m sorry if I cause any.
The scene in the TARDIS. When The Doctor activates the Voice Interface. How are people making it about ships? I’m not talking about the people who are excited to see Eleven and Rose share the screen, or the people who love that Amelia was there, and she said ‘Fish fingers and custard’. I’m talking about the people in the tags who are claiming some sort of victory. That because Rose was the first one to appear that somehow The Doctor loves her the most, or the ones that say that because he stuck with Amelia it’s because he’s so in love with Amy.
I don’t think the scene was about that. It was all about him. The perception he has of himself. Do people honestly think that he doesn’t love Donna and Martha as much as he loves Rose and Amy? Martha who walked the Earth for him, and Donna who for one shining moment was the most important woman in creation. Rose was first because she was the first companion (in the modern era), and Amelia (not Amy) was last because- in his own words- he hadn’t ‘screwed her up yet’. It wasn’t about who he liked the most, it was about guilt. The guilt he feels about the part he’s played in their life. He doesn’t see the good he’s done, he doesn’t see that as much as he was made better by them, they were made better by him. He only sees the bad stuff, and he only feels the guilt.
The reason he switched the image in the first place, tells you all you need to know. ‘At least make it someone I like’. He doesn’t even like himself, and that is so very sad. He doesn’t see how magnificent he is, because all he sees is the way he thinks he’s fucked up. Not one of those companions would change their time with him. They all learnt from him, he helped bring out the fabulous people that they are (it was always in them- he just helped it along) and they all loved him. I hope one day he sees that.
*ends outburst and joins Hitler in the cupboard*
I mean, the Hitler parts should have not been there (just as the whole nazi thing really, was there a point to that?) and River-not-River-yet actually annoyed me for a bit there (never thought I’d say that) but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and I loved River as much as before by the end.
Still, next week we’re back to adventures in time & space, baby Melody be damned?
EDIT: also, that line about River giving mixed signals because she’s a woman, har har. WHY? WHYYY??
OH, AND THE ROSE/MARTHA/DONNA “CAMEO”. PLEASE. CALL ME NEXT TIME THE PROMO PICTURES FROM THE BBC DEPARTMENT ACTUALLY TALK.
Yeahhhh. I pretty much felt the same way. I liked it, yet I didn’t at the same time. And Moffat definitely needs a lesson on how to write women with respect, but we all know he has issues with that.
I’m so bored watching it that I can hardly stand it. The weird homophobic joke on the plane was unacceptable, not sure if the rest of you caught that.
I’ll try and keep watching it for some of the good moments, but it’s going to be hard.
It’s so generic and it’s lost all of it’s charm. I hate the fact that there’s this gimmick of people not being able to die. When was Torchwood about gimmicks?! Neverrrr. Torchwood needs to go home.
If Torchwood “goes home” it won’t be made at all. Psst, btw? BBC Worldwide still has all of the control of the show. Now what?
And have you watched Torchwood? They’ve always been about gimmicks.
You people kill me. You hate it and yet you sit here watching it week after week after week after week to sit here and rag on it.
I’m sick of seeing this shit in my track tags. Find another song to sing. Hate it? It isn’t “Torchwood”? Turn your goddamn tv off and STFU.
With that said, here’s a word from Rex Matheson. GOOD NIGHT.
A gimmick is a device and I wouldn’t necessarily say that Torchwood was all about that. Having a specific device like the idea of Miracle Day is a gimmick, which is what I was getting at.
And that’s great that you like it, I personally haven’t been watching it because it hasn’t interested me, I’ve definitely tried though and tried to keep an open mind about it. Of course it’s going to be different being on a premium channel and not on BBC. And yes I know that BBC still has control of the show. Thanks. I’ve personally only seen to about the 1st part of the 2nd episode, but wasn’t captivated enough. I do still want to watch it to see if I can enjoy it anymore. Especially since there’s already talk about the show not being renewed. So it might not be made at all in general after the 10 episode run it has.
I’m sorry about the way some of the fandom treats your character.
There is a huge portion of us that will prove them wrong every time. You worked hard on Doctor Who just like all the others did.
You are a very naturalistic actor and I am sorry if this hasn’t been acknowledged. I loved your interpretation of Martha Jones and she will always be top of my list, even though all companions have different traits.
Martha Jones should be an example for all women, heck, people.
Just had to say that I have been stalking this blog practically all day and I think it's absolutely fan-freaking-tastic. In my circle of friends, there are only four of us who watch "Doctor Who" and, of us four, I'm the only one who claims Martha Jones as their favorite companion. The others have an appreciation of Martha, but in our conversations we all tend to stay within the common grounds of our mutual adoration of Donna and Amy. It gets a little lonely being the only staunch supporter of Martha Jones so finding your blog was a wonderful discovery. Thank you for this awesome blog. It totally made my day.
Aw!! Thank you so much, It’s always awesome when us fans of Martha can find each other and it’s definitely clear, she’s my favorite by a landslide. More Martha love needs to be had! She’s beautiful and amazing. We have to stick together of course. We are out there! I’ve never understood and never will the immense hate some people have towards her, it’s COMPLETELY irrational and at this point I’m always willing to have a conversation with someone who hates her, but at the end of the day, they don’t tell me anything new. I can totally understand someone rubbing you the wrong way or getting on your nerves a bit, but hate is uncalled for. So welcome!
I love that character but I swear, over half the tag is just people hating her.
Why does she get so much hate? Because she’s a girl with some unrequited love? Who hasn’t been there? Honestly… Because she’s a doctor and actually has some smarts? Because she’s a badass that saved the world from the Master? Because she can pull her own weight in Torchwood? Because she’s of colour? What is it?
If I can think of one character on Doctor Who that gets the most undeserved hatred, it’s her.
I’m always thinking to myself, why is she hated so? I really CAN’T understand it.
I’ve heard the tired reasons
She replaced Rose
She’s whiny (pines too much) because she’s in love/has the gall to stand up for herself when the Doctor CONSTANTLY compares her to…
How anyone could feel this way towards Martha ASTOUNDS ME!!! She was the companion when I first started to get into Who then I bought Season 3 and feel in love with her!!! I cant say anymore becasue what has been previously said in this post represents my feelings to the T
Oh and Season 2 Rose is a whiny bitch
Same goes for me, Martha was the first companion I’ve seen and she is awesome! The only bad thing about her is her being in love with the Doctor. Not that being in love with him is bad, but it outweighed all of her character traits in my eyes. It makes me sad that so many persons are hated because they replace Rose. Rose is not the Doctor’s only true love. There were people before her and there will be people after her that the Doctor might fall in love with.
The thing is Rose fell in love with the Doctor too, but it was “okay” because he loved her back. When really it was a bit scary and obsessive. Season 1 Rose was more bearable, but not by much. It wasn’t fair how Martha’s story was treated, being in love didn’t make her weak it made her stronger. She walked away because she knew that it wouldn’t work. Russell t Davies definitely could’ve benefited from leaving his Rose boner behind for a season and let Martha be. No matter what she was strong and got shit done.
